This hiking route, approximately 10 km long, is impressive. It crosses beautiful landscapes, rich in natural beauty, ruins of old mills and narrow passages before ending under the bridge at Kastori and from there to Marmarogefyro, a stone single-arch bridge. The path is clearly marked and caution is required in the narrow passage of the gorge, especially if it has rained recently and the water is rushing. The path after the narrow to Kastori is easy, it crosses the river many times and caution is required on the steps and makeshift bridges along the path.
The starting point is Georgitsi with the end in the village of Kastori. The gorge is ideal for all ages and the best time to cross it is spring and summer. Crossing the gorge is a unique experience! The cave has two main chambers, where large lakes of seawater are located and are connected to each other by a corridor. There are also other smaller chambers, also with ponds. The first chamber has dimensions of 31×66 meters, while it is covered by a lake of 16×52 meters. A “skylight” lets the sunlight through, creating unique images. The Viros Gorge is one of the four gorges in the Western Mani region that cross Mount Taygetos. It has a total length of 19 kilometers and is certainly the most historic! In the Middle Ages, the inhabitants of the area created stone observatories, also known as viglas, in caves or steep parts of the gorge. They were built in such a way as to ensure visual contact with each other so that they could send messages and warn the inhabitants of the area of a possible enemy raid.
Crossing the gorge is certainly a unique experience, which reveals many beauties. In the gorge we encounter the ruined Monastery of Lycakis from 1570 with frescoes from 1873, as well as the Monastery of Sotiros from the 14th century. Also, at the beginning of the gorge, the Byzantine church of Agia Sophia Gournitsa is noteworthy, as well as the tombs of the Dioscuri, above old Kardamyli.
The path starts from the mouth of the usually dry riverbed located in the Old Town of Kardamyli. The path is circular and is also suitable for beginner hikers.
